HAIR LOSS (THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT SHOWER PLUG!)

One of the most common hair anxieties people speak to me about is hair loss.

We all have our moments, even the people who look like they have the strongest, thickest hair, have their hang-ups about losing their hair.

In this blog I’m here to tell you how extremely common it is, why it happens and what you can do about it.

We all know about how the detrimental effects stress can have on our bodies, however that stress can also really affect our hair.

Lack of sleep…
can seriously cause hair and scalp issues. Your body needs enough time throughout the night to replenish and repair, so should therefore be one of your most important ingredients in your haircare regime. If you are really committed to the cause I would recommend wearing a hair mask overnight once a week to really inject some nutrients into your hair and scalp.

Diet…
can be effected by a stressful lifestyle as this affects your eating habits. You then reach for the comfort food which has very little nutritional benefit. A balanced diet is vital to the health of your hair, so it is important that you incorporate all food groups into your daily routine – proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and fresh fruit and veg. Protein is the most important, as it’s the substance your hair is made out of!

Trauma…
is a common factor. What you will notice is that hair will begin to fall out in excess 6-12 weeks after a stressful period. You may notice more hair in your brush or in your shower and on your clothes and pillow. In my opinion this has a ripple effect as you then begin to stress about losing hair and the cycle continues. Just try to remember it is going to grow back, it isn’t going to be permanent, so just try to get yourself back to being healthy and happy.

Scalp issues…
such as dandruff can also cause hair loss. Sometimes stress can cause dry or flaky scalps, this is due to stress affecting hormone levels, therefore disrupting the micro-flora of the scalp. Flaking can cause hair loss and scratching may result in further irritation and even damage the surface of your scalp, so it is important to tackle it ASAP. I would recommend the Kerastase Specifique range which specialises in scalp problems but also caters for dry or oily hair.

Medication…
will have various side effects and more commonly than not this will hit your hair. If you are taking ongoing, strong medication this may even result in your hair going curly or dry and brittle.

People see TV adverts and Pinterest boards full of ladies (and men) with beautifully thick, long, shiny hair. Yes these are real people, however, there are a few tricks of the trade that ensures the hair looks THAT good for THAT shot!

In previous photoshoots I have used props like wind machines, extensions and padding to make that one shot look as incredible as it can.

Don’t get me wrong this can be achieved at home, but who has the time?

This is why it is vital you put your trust in your hairdresser and they take the time to talk through various options that make your hair as thick and as full as possible, yet works for you at home, with your lifestyle. There are products they can introduce you to such as L’Oréal Techni Art Super Dust, which gives you the effect of backcombing without the stress on your hair.

So just try to remember, relax, eat well, get plenty of sleep, be healthy and the rest will follow.
